All Eyes On Kohli To Create History For India In WTC Final vs Australia

All eyes are on India's star batter Virat Kohli as India is chasing the mammoth 444-run target on the Fifth day of the World Test Championship (WTC) final at the Oval in London on Sunday. Virat who failed to deliver in the first innings, learnt from his mistake and batted solidly in the second innings. He is at the crease with 44 (60)*. India's run machine on the fourth day of WTC final joined an elite list as he became the fifth Indian batter to score more than 2000 runs against Australia.

'Master Blaster' Sachin Tendulkar still holds the record for scoring the highest number of runs against Australia, at 3,630. At second is VVS Laxman with 2,434 runs. The third position is held by the current Indian head coach Rahul Dravid, who has scored 2,143 runs against the Australian team.

The experienced Cheteshwar Pujara is the fourth batter on the list with 2,074 runs. Virat Kohli is at fifth with 2,037* runs.

He has an excellent record against Australia in all formats of the game as he has scored more than 5000 runs in 93 matches with an average of 51.05. He has also bagged 16 hundreds and 24 fifties against Aussies.

Virat also holds a reputation for scoring the most runs in WTC by the Indian batter.

Meanwhile, an eventful Day 4 of the WTC final came to a close with Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane holding India's fort.

At the end of the fifth day, India scored 164/3 in 40 overs with Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli at the crease with scores of 20(59)* and 44(60)*.

After the arguable dismissal of Shubman Gill in the second innings, Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara kept the scoreboard moving.

But Rohit Sharma became the target of Nathan Lyon and Pujara was dismissed by Pat Cummins's bowling.

India was down to 93/3, From that point, Rahane and Kohli took on the Australian bowlers and subdued them with their defensive skills and attacking shots. They went on to build an unbeaten 71-run partnership at the end of the day.

India ended the day with 164/3 and they still need 280 runs to win the game.

"Don't Get Excited": Pakistan Great's Advice To Indian Pacers At WTC Final

Pakistan legend Wasim Akram on Monday said the Indian fast bowling unit should not get "carried away" with the new ball and must be patient for success in the World Test Championship final against Australia, which starts on Wednesday. The world No. 1 side India will take on the second-placed Australia in the final of the WTC at The Oval here from June 7, as the 2021-2023 cycle of the competition comes to an end with the summit clash. Neither of the two teams have played Test cricket in the last two months as most of the players were busy in the IPL, and the change in format will be swift, along with the change from white Kookaburra ball to the red Dukes.

Akram hoped that the Indian fast bowling attack, with Mohammad Shami as the spearhead and the wily Mohammed Siraj as a certain starter, would be wise with their tactics on the field.

"These guys are experienced, and they shouldn't get carried away (with the new ball). We all know it swings for 10 to 15 overs, so don't give away extra runs in the first 10 to 15 overs as a fast bowler," Akram was quoted as saying by the ICC.

"(Early on) don't get too excited if there is a bit of bounce as that is what the Australians want," he added.

It is for the first time in 140 years of its history that The Oval, which usually hosts a Test late in the English summer, will be holding a match as early as in the start of June. Hence, the pitch as well as the conditions, combined with players' recent assignments, make this contest even more intriguing.

"This pitch normally favours teams from the sub-continent, but whenever we toured here... it was always at the end of August or start of September. This one is in June, the square is different, fresh square, and the ball is different altogether as a Dukes," said Akram.

While India middle-order mainstay Cheteshwar Pujara was the only player from his side plying his trade in the County Championship for Sussex, several Australians such as Marnus Labuschagne, fast bowler Michael Neser and even Steve Smith — who also played for Sussex — have recent experience of the conditions.

"If He Stays Fit...": South Africa Great's High Praise For Hardik Pandya

Rating Hardik Pandya as one of the best fast-bowling allrounders, former South African great Lance Klusener on Saturday believes the Indian possibly gave up on Test cricket a bit too easily to manage his workload. Plagued by injuries, Pandya, who last played Tests for India in September 2018, has limited himself to only playing white-ball cricket and ruled himself out of the upcoming World Test Championship final against Australia. "He (Pandya) is a fantastic cricketer, and if he can stay fit and continues to bowl 135 kmph, he will always be challenging... as one of the best allrounders in the world," Klusener told reporters in a media interaction at the Calcutta Sports Journalists' Club.

Pandya had ruled himself out saying it would not be "ethical" to take someone's place without even contributing one per cent in India's journey to the WTC final.

Asked if Pandya gave up on Test cricket a bit too easily, Klusener said, "Yes, possibly. Test cricket (is) always the pinnacle of testing where you are as a cricketer, and testing yourselves.

"Test cricket hasn't really changed much from way back but I also understand that times have moved on as well."

Pace-bowling allrounders not dibbly-dobblers

Klusener further said a fast-bowling allrounder is not a "dibbly-dobbler" but someone who can clock 135kph consistently.

"Fast bowling allrounders need to be bowling 135. I don't think there would be some dibbly-dobblers that we used to see in England, I don't think all that (is) effective anymore.

"I honestly believe that a guy like Ben Stokes who bowls 135, those people are still gold in any form of the game," said Klusener, a member of the 1999 ODI World Cup team that had a heartbreak loss to Australia in the semi-final.

But managing the three formats in today's era has contributed to the decline of fast-bowling allrounder. However, Klusener believes their time will come again.

"I always think it goes in cycles. When I played, there were a lot of fast-bowling allrounders... then we kind of saw the allrounders bowling spin.

"Certainly at this point in time, I don't see as many fast-bowling allrounders, I just think it's a cycle. We might just see in the next five years those kinds of cricketers coming through again. If we manage the workloads correctly there is a lot of cricket, there's still a place for them in any team." Klusener believes India are well equipped to field a pace or spin-heavy lineup and it will be horses for courses for them in the WTC final against Australia beginning at The Oval from June 7.

"Spin has been India's strength traditionally. They have the attack that can play on any surface," he said, when asked whether India should go for two spinners or one pace-bowling allrounder in Shardul Thakur.

"The way the Indian seamers have developed in the last couple of years -- a reason why they play in successive WTC finals, that's why they are one of the best Test sides in the world.

"Teams in the past would prepare green tops so India won't be able to compete, but that's not the case anymore. I think they are now well equipped, whatever the conditions, they will be able to pick the team that will be competitive."

India's batting vs Australia's bowling in WTC final

Asked about his favourite team to win the WTC final, he said, "It's a tough call. The battle will be between Australia's bowlers and India's batters, the team that wins that battle will come out on top," he said.

Klusener was also all praise for countryman Faf du Plessis, who had another fruitful IPL season finishing second on the run-getters' list behind Shubman Gill.

"Just hats off to Faf for staying fit and for being hungry, contributing in the best T20 competition in the world (for RCB).

"He's going to Big Bash (League) now... plays as much as he can. It's phenomenal at this age for him to have the fire inside him, we need to respect that," Klusener said.

Du Plessis had given up on Test cricket following a "breakdown" in his relationship with coach Mark Boucher.

Klusener believed it was more to do with managing his workload.

"Cricket has got to a point where there are other opportunities for you. You get to an age, you get opportunities that pay better or easier on the body, allow you to have more time at home."

Mission 'IPL cricketer' from Tripura

Klusener, 51, was unveiled as Tripura's coaching consultant for the upcoming domestic season.

In his first official interaction with the media after taking over the role, Klusener said their mission would be a "success" if they can produce one IPL or India cricketer from the northeastern state.

"I want to leave a lasting impression. I like to take up challenges. If I can inspire one person to get into an IPL or the national team, then it will be a success," said Klusener, who has worked with Afghanistan, Zimbabwe, and several other franchises as coach.

As per his contract, Klusener will spend a total of 100 days coaching Tripura, providing his expertise to age-group, women's and Ranji Trophy cricket.

"We have the coaching staff in place in all the departments. He will oversee their functioning and add valuable inputs," TCA vice-president Timir Chanda said.

Chanda further said they have retained veteran India wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha for the upcoming season.

Saha joined Tripura as mentor-cum-cricketer after falling out with Cricket Association of Bengal.
