Peter Handscomb In Reckoning For Nagpur Test Against India

Australia are mulling the option of bringing back Peter Handscomb to bat in the middle-order for his ability to play spin, if Cameron Green does not recover in time for their series opener against India from February 9, head coach and selector Andrew McDonald indicated. Recovering from a fractured finger, seam-bowling all-rounder Green is also named in the Test squad alongside Handscomb. "He's really important," McDonald was quoted saying in the Sydney Morning Herald.

"It's been well documented over a period of time that his play against spin is excellent, and we feel as though he's returned probably to what he was producing two or three years ago." Both Handscomb and Green are undergoing batting practices on tailor-made "scarified" pitches in the sultry conditions of Bon Andrews Oval in North Sydney for them to experience match simulation ahead of the four-Test series that will determine their World Test Championship Final qualification.

Handscomb was also a member of their last tour to India in 2017. He also provides the utility value by doubling up as a wicketkeeper.

"Lots of runs in Shield cricket on those slower surfaces as well. He's able to keep as well, so it gives us every option for Josh (Inglis) not to be there and if anything were to happen to Alex Carey, there's flexibility there, but also in close fielder as well, bat pad, highly valued when you tour the subcontinent.

"We see him as an important right-hand option. Got a lot of left-handers, so very important right-hand option for us. If there were to be any late changes, or Cameron Green doesn't make that first Test, we feel we have some good options.

"We value his (Green) batting first and foremost really, he's a batter in our top six and we value that, his bowling is a bonus," McDonald added.

"Where he's positioned at the moment, his biggest challenge is bowling. There is a lack of loading there, and it's one of the key reasons around us getting into this camp and this mode early.

"He's got to consult with the surgeon again tomorrow, and that's about the four-week mark, where he should be given a tick of approval that that bone has healed.

"I don't want to speak medical terms here, but basically after that, it should be just building him up and see how he goes each session.

"Building confidence is the main thing, setting him up to succeed in that first Test match, having a good enough time, that will be the critical question," the coach added.

Australia also had their injured paceman Mitchell Starc back in the training and he is likely to arrive late for the tour ahead of the second Test in Delhi.

McDonald also hailed North Sydney Oval curator Kieran Meurant, who prepared a pitch similar to the ones in India.

"We feel as though out there the surfaces we got are very similar to what we're going to confront in India, which is very difficult to replicate,” McDonald said.

“But we feel as though we've got close to that, so the ground staff have done a fantastic job.”

2nd ODI LIVE Score: South Africa Look To Seal Series Against England

SA vs ENG, 2nd ODI Live Cricket Score: Eight games and just one win! That's how England's report card has been in the 50-over format of late. Having lost the opening ODI against hosts South Africa, Jos Buttler's men have their backs against the wall as they look to bounce back and keep themselves alive in the 3-match series. Rassie van der Dussen (111) was the star of the match for the Proteas in the series opener while David Miller also played a handy knock of 53 off 56. Chasing the challenging target of 299 runs, England got off to a fine start as Jason Roy (113) and Dawid Malan (59) put up 146 runs for the first wicket. But, Anrich Nortje ran riot, picking up 4 wickets for 62 runs, as the hosts secured a 27-run win. (LIVE Scorecard)

Kohli, Rohit Stunned As Kishan Misses Stumping Opportunity vs NZ. See Pics

Devon Conway was handed a lifeline during the third ODI encounter between India and New Zealand in Indore on Tuesday when Ishan Kishan missed on an easy stumping. Conway went on to score 138 off 100 deliveries but it was not enough to clinch the win for the visitors. The ball from Yuzvendra Chahal completely surprised the Kiwi opener, but with the batsman out of the crease, Kishan was unable to collect it properly as the opportunity was missed. Kishan was visibly upset with the miss and the expressions from both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma after the incident quickly went viral on various social media platforms.

See Pics: Kohli, Rohit Stunned As Kishan Misses Stumping Opportunity vs NZ

Talking about the match, Rohit Sharma scored his first ODI hundred in three years while Shubman Gill continued his domination with another sublime ton as India completed a clean sweep with a 90-run win over New Zealand in the third match in Indore on Tuesday. Batters from both sides lit up the dead rubber as 680 runs were scored at the Holkar Stadium. Rohit (101 off 85 balls) got to the three-figure mark for the first time since January 2020 while Gill (112 off 78) scored his fourth ODI hundred to take India to 385 for nine.

Following twin failures, the New Zealand top-order put up a much better show. Devon Conway (138) stitched crucial partnerships but Shardul Thakur (3/45) and Kuldeep Yadav (3/62) regularly struck to bowl out the Black Caps for 295 in 41.2 overs.

It was India's second consecutive clean sweep, having beaten Sri Lanka last week.

After Hardik Pandya (1/37) got rid of Finn Allen (0), Conway shared 106 runs with Henry Nicholls and 78 runs with Daryl Mitchell (24).

In the absence of Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj, the Indian bowlers struggled initially, leaking runs as Conway tonked the ball all around the park.

Shardul, however, managed to turn the game, as he took back-to-back wickets of Mitchell and Tom Latham (0) in the 26th over.

In his next over, Thakur sent Glenn Phillips (5) packing with a cross-seamed delivery.

Umran Malik (1/52) then got Conway as the centurion pulled awkwardly with Rohit doing the rest at midwicket as the match seemed to slip out of New Zealand's grasp.

The spin duo of Kuldeep and Yuzvendra Chahal (2/43) then cleaned up the tail.

Mission 2024: Hardik Pandya's Indian T20 Team For Life Without 'Big 3'

Hardik Pandya will be expected to begin his full-time T20 captaincy tenure on a bold note as the Indian T20 team prepares to start its life beyond Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul with the three match series against Sri Lanka, beginning here on Tuesday. The followers of Indian cricket got more than glimpse of Hardik's vision for the team when led the team to victory in the rain-hit T20 series in New Zealand. In an ODI World Cup year, the shortest format is not priority for the Indian team but the series will allow Hardik to start planning for the future, specifically the 2024 T20 World Cup. India's famed top three -- Rohit, Kohli and Rahul -- are not part of the squad and irrespective of their T20 future , the team must prepare for life without them.

The problem with the current Indian T20 team in recent past, has been distinct lack of intent and ability to play fearless cricket.

The idea of self preservation at the cost of impactful performance was hurting the team for a long time and perhaps the poor show in the T20 World Cup became the last straw.

The Combination

Rishabh Pant, who suffered a horrific car crash last week, opened for the team in New Zealand alongside Ishan Kishan. Pant was anyway not picked for the Sri Lanka series, making Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad opening combination most likely for the first T20 at the high-scoring Wankhede Stadium.

Both Kishan and Gaikwad have been bonafide IPL stars for a past few years and this is their real chance to show their wares without worrying about their place in the side.

With next T20 World Cup at least 18 months away, the duo is expected to get a fair run although the number of T20 Internationals this year is less than 15 with ODI gaining more precedence.

Shubman Gill, who is yet to make his T20 debut, is another opening option for Hardik. At number three, the skipper will rely on the brilliance of world's No. 1 batter Suryakumar Yadav. With Hardik keen to have six bowling options in the playing eleven, Deepak Hooda could be a likely starter for Tuesday's game.

The management will have to choose between Sanju Samson and uncapped Rahul Tripathi for the one spot in the middle order. Tripathi has been warming the bench for a while now and it could continue against Sri Lanka but Samson on account of experience should get a first go.

Though uncapped Shivam Mavi and Mukesh Kumar have been included in the squad, the likely pace bowling trio will be of Arshdeep Singh, Harshal Patel and Umran Malik.

India could also pack in more all-rounders in the team with the option of Washington Sundar and Axar Patel. Specialist spinner Yuzvendra Chahal is expected to play in the series opener.

Reigning Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka will be no pushovers for India even in their own conditions. Sri Lanka have rewarded the star performers of the Lanka Premier League -- Avishka Fernando, Chamika Karunaratne and Sadeera Samarawickrama -- by including them in the team for the India series.

Both Fernando and Karunaratne have made a comeback and will be looking to make an impactful contribution.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa will be their key batter in the middle-order.

India: Hardik Pandya (captain), Ishan Kishan (wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav (VC), Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi, Sanju Samson, Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Harshal Patel, Umran Malik, Shivam Mavi, Mukesh Kumar.

Sri Lanka: Dasun Shanaka (C), Pathum Nissanka, Avishka Fernando, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Kusal Mendis (VC for ODIs), Bhanuka Rajapaksa (only for T20Is), Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Wanindu Hasaranga (VC for T20Is), Ashen Bandara, Maheesh Theekshana, Jeffrey Vandersay (only for ODIs), Chamika Karunaratne, Dilshan Madushanka, Kasun Rajitha, Nuwanidu Fernando (only for ODIs), Dunith Wellalage, Pramod Madushan, Lahiru Kumara, Nuwan Thushara (only for T20Is).

Over 'Fear Of Infection', Rishabh Pant Shifted From ICU To Private Suite

India's star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant "is doing well and has been shifted to a private suite due to fear of infection", revealed Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) Director Shyam Sharma on Monday. "Due to fear of infection, we have told his family and hospital administration to shift him to a private suite. He is doing better and will recover soon," said Sharma to ANI. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Sunday announced that the state government will provide all help for the 25-year-old's treatment, who was seriously injured in a road accident near Roorkee on December 30 while on his way to surprise his mother.

Pant was alone in the car and reportedly fell asleep at the wheel when the accident happened. According to a statement by the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) in coordination with the Max Hospital Dehradun where he has been admitted, the cricketer has suffered two cuts on his forehead, a ligament tear in his right knee along with injuries on his right wrist, ankle, toe and back.

Sharma on Saturday flagged concerns over visitors flocking to the hospital to catch a glimpse of the cricketer, Rishabh Pant, who is under treatment.

"Those who are going to meet Pant should avoid, as there are chances of infection. There should be no VIP movement to meet Pant, and people visiting him should avoid it as there are chances of infection for Pant," Sharma told ANI over the phone.

Shyam Sharma on Saturday arrived at Max Hospital in Dehradun to meet Pant. Sharma said: "He is stable and recovering well. Our BCCI doctors are in touch with the doctors here. Jay Shah is monitoring it. As of now, he'll remain admitted here. He told me that he tried to save (his car) from a pothole (when the accident occurred)."

Pant escaped the near-fatal accident on Friday with burn injuries among others that will require plastic surgeries and he could be airlifted to Delhi if required. He met with the accident while returning from Delhi to Roorkee as his car collided with the divider on the Narsan border of Roorkee near Hammadpur Jhal.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India also issued a statement on Friday saying, "Pant has two cuts on his forehead, a ligament tear in his right knee and has also hurt his right wrist, ankle, and toe and has suffered abrasion injuries on his back. Rishabh's condition remains stable, and he has now been shifted to Max Hospital, Dehradun, where he will undergo MRI scans to ascertain the extent of his injuries and formulate his further course of treatment, as per the BCCI statement shared with the media."

"Could've Been Interesting Choice": Karthik's Big Statement On India Star

2022 turned out to be a mediocre one for Team India as they saw numerous downs this year. From losing against South Africa in the three-match Test series to facing defeat in the ODIs against Bangladesh, India had many such dull moments. Despite having a blistering start in the T20 World Cup 2022, the Rohit Sharma-led India had a disappointing end to their campaign after they lost to England in the semi-finals. The Indian players faced severe criticism for their abysmal performance in the knockout stage, which led to their 10-wicket defeat. Many fans and experts called-out the management for their decision of benching spinner Yuzvendra Chahal for the entire tournament.

However, veteran India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik stated that such calls are taken because the coach and the captain's beliefs in a certain player.

"These are all calls that are taken by the captain and coach with the belief they had in a certain player. To be fair, Ravichandran Ashwin started the tournament well but probably didn't end well. But Chahal would've definitely made a lot more damage, it could've been an interesting choice. But hindsight is a very interesting thing to look at once the results come out,” said Karthik on Cricbuzz.

Ravichandran Ashwin had an average outing in the T20 World Cup 2022. He scalped 6 wickets and scored 21 runs in six matches.

England thrashed India by 10 wickets in the semi-final clash of the T20 World Cup 2022. Chasing 169, Alex Hales hit 86 not out off 47 balls and Jos Buttler scored unbeaten 80 off 49 balls as England reached the target in just 16 overs.

Later, England went on to lift the World Cup title after defeating Pakistan in the summit clash.

Talking about India, the Hardik Pandya-led side will now be going up against Sri Lanka in a three-match T20I series, with the first match at Wankhede Stadium January 3.

"2023 I'm Ready": Archer Sets Eyes On Comeback To Cricket With SA ODIs

England pacer Jofra Archer, whose career has been plagued by injuries to his elbow and lower back, is looking forward to his comeback in 2023. "2022 thank you. 2023 I'm ready," Archer took to Twitter to announce his return. Having bought him for Rs 8 crore, Mumbai Indians sorely missed the injured Archer last season. The record five-time IPL champions may finally hope to see his dream pairing with India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah in the upcoming season.

MI have also signed him for their Cape Town franchise in the inaugural SAT20.

Archer, who was England's leading wicket-taker in their 2019 ODI World Cup triumph, last played an international game in March 2021. A fit-again Archer was seen in action in Abu Dhabi in November when he trained there with Test squad. He also hit Zak Crawley on the head with a sharp bouncer in the first of his nine overs.

After playing in the inaugural SA20 in January, Archer will play for England in the ODI series against South Africa beginning on January 27.

He will then be seen in action in a limited-overs tour of Bangladesh followed by the IPL.
